Lutfuzzaman Babar bailed in four cases


Court has granted bail to former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar in the case of the murder of former Finance Minister and former Member of Parliament for Habiganj-3, Shah A M S Kibria. Babar applied for bail through his lawyer, citing illness, and the court granted it after a hearing. On Wednesday evening (September 11), Judge Swapan Kumar Sarker of the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal issued this order. Additionally, bail has been granted to Lutfozzaman Babar in three cases filed in the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal regarding the attempted murder of former Railway Minister Suranjit Sen Gupta and charges related to explosives. The tribunal's public prosecutor, Sarwar Ahmed Chowdhury Abdal, confirmed this information. The defense lawyer, Md. Shahiduzzaman, stated, "In the case of the murder of former Finance Minister Shah A M S Kibria, former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar applied for bail through his lawyer citing illness, and the court approved it after the hearing." On January 27, 2005, former Finance Minister Shah Kibria and his nephew Shah Manzur Huda, along with three others, were killed in a grenade attack while returning from a public meeting organized by the local Awami League in Baidyer Bazar, Habiganj. Additionally, 70 people were injured in the incident. In this case, local Awami League leader Advocate Md. Abdul Majid Khan filed separate cases for murder and under the Explosive Substances Act at the Sadar police station. Ten people were named as accused in the murder case. Following an investigation in 2011, an additional 26 people were added as accused. Later, in a third round, former Home Minister Lutfozzaman Babar, BNP leader Haris Chowdhury, Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, former mayor of Habiganj GK Gaus, and nearly 35 others were named as accused. Subsequently, on September 13, 2015, charges were framed against the accused in the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal.
