In "mob justice" mentally unstable Tofajjal died in Dhaka University, Bangladesh

Tofazzal Hossain, a 30-year-old man, went to Fazlul Haque Hall at Dhaka University to satisfy his hunger. He was beaten to death by students on suspicion of being a thief. Before being beaten, the students allowed Tofazzal Hossain to eat rice. Tofazzal did not realize that this meal would be his last.

Tofazzal had become mentally unstable after suffering a blow related to a romantic issue. Shortly after, his mother, father, and only elder brother passed away. As a result, Tofazzal wandered the streets without family or guardians. Before losing his mental balance, Tofazzal was the son of the late Abdur Rahman from the Char Duani village in the Kathaltali Union of Patharghata Upazila and was the president of the Union Chhatra League. In our country, incidents of mob justice leading to murder occur frequently. In July 2011, six students were killed on suspicion of being 'robbers' in Aminbazar. In 2019, a mother named Taslima Begum Renu was beaten to death in Badda on suspicion of being a child kidnapper. Recently, another such incident occurred in Rajshahi, where a former Chhatra League leader named Abdullah Al Masud was beaten to death on

According to a report, between 2011 and 2018, 800 people were killed in mob lynching in Bangladesh. In the last six and a half years, approximately 286 more people have been killed in mob lynching. Among them, 32 people were killed in mob lynching in the last 7 months (January-July) after the elections in 2024. In Dhaka alone, 16 people were killed.
What is mob justice? Generally, mob justice refers to the law of the crowd. When people take the law into their own hands and administer justice outside of legal processes, it is called mob justice. If someone dies in such incidents or is killed in a mob lynching, it is referred to as mob lynching. This means extrajudicial killing. Additionally, burning houses, injuring someone, and vandalism by the crowd are all part of mob justice. What are the reasons for mob justice? Mob justice and mob lynching occur in a country or society for various reasons. However, when there is a lack of rule of law, weak laws, and public disillusionment with justice, mob justice and mob lynching are more likely to occur. Furthermore, when people become increasingly frustrated with injustice and impunity, the context for "mob justice" and "lynching mobs" is created. In such judgments, often ordinary people also suffer. There are broadly ten reasons behind the organization of mob justice. These reasons include: 01. Lack of legislation If the public believes that legislation or its enforcement is not being done properly, they may take matters into their own hands. 02. Mismanagement If the administrative and legal systems are weak or ineffective, people may take action themselves. 03. Discontent and anger If the public feels deep anger or dissatisfaction over a specific incident, they may resort to mob justice as an expression of that anger. 04. Social or political tension Sometimes, due to social or political tensions, the public may lose faith in the legislation and enforcement of laws and may lean towards their own system of justice. 05. Spontaneous reaction

In some cases, people react immediately out of dissatisfaction or anger and resort to mob justice. 06. Political Influence Politicians often try to influence the judicial system to protect their own or their supporters' interests. 07. Economic Influence Wealthy and powerful individuals can often buy off the judicial system to escape their crimes. 08. Social Inequality It can be very difficult for lower-class individuals to obtain justice, as they may not have the means to hire good lawyers. 09. Weakness of the Judiciary If the judiciary is weak, it can easily succumb to political or economic pressure. 10. Weakness of Law Enforcement Agencies If the police or other law enforcement agencies are weak, they may fail to take appropriate action against criminals and may initiate false cases. Philosopher William Godwin said, "Legal justice is the sum of all moral duties." It is said that "justice obtained through the rule of law is a permanent principle of civilized society." In fact, every independent sovereign state has its own laws. Accordingly, all judicial processes are conducted. When this is disrupted, the judicial process is hindered, leading to unexpected chaos or mob justice. Measures to Stop Mob Justice To prevent mob justice, we need to build a strong and independent judiciary. The government must strengthen law enforcement agencies and take strict measures to combat corruption. Most importantly, the public must be made aware of their rights and speak out against mob justice.
